Epilepsy Foundation  Alabama Partners with University of South Alabama to Provide Seizure Recogntion and First Aid Training

MOBILE, Ala. (May 13, 2026) — The Epilepsy Foundation Alabama is partnering with the University of South Alabama Housing department to provide seizure recognition and first aid certification training to all university resident assistants ahead of the fall 2026 semester.

The initiative is intended to ensure student staff are prepared to recognize and respond to seizure-related situations in campus housing.

“Partnerships like this are essential to building safer, more informed communities,” said Jeremiah Stone, executive director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Alabama. “When students know those around them are trained and prepared, it fosters not only safety but also a sense of belonging. We are proud to partner with the University of South Alabama to help ensure no student faces epilepsy alone.”

More than 54,000 Alabamians are living with epilepsy.  1 in 10 people will experience a seizure in their lifetime, underscoring the need for increased awareness and training.

“Our goal is to create a residential environment where every student feels safe, supported and valued,” said Dr. Jeremy Sheffield, executive director of housing at the University of South Alabama. “By investing in this training, we are equipping our staff with the skills needed to respond in ways that directly impact student well-being and success.”

The Epilepsy Foundation of Alabama offers free seizure recognition and first aid training online and in person. More information is available at https://www.epilepsyalabama.com.
